Indonesia: Jakarta governor Ahok stands trial for blasphemy.
Earlier millions of Indonesians came out on the streets to protest against Ahok (christian governor)
In fact it was one of the largest protests ever in which more than 7 million (70 lakh) muslims came out on the street asking for the arrest of the governor who now faces trial in the court.
Many muslims applauded the protests citing it as the power of muslims, feeling proud about the sheer size of the protests.
The controversy started when the christian made a statement during a speech.
"Hiding behind holy verses", he said many in the country's political elite were "cowards" who sought to divide Indonesians to gain power.
In the address, he said that religious conservatives who cited a Quranic verse in support of their position that Christians should not hold high office were being duplicitous. He told a crowd: “Ladies and gentlemen, you don’t have to vote for me — because you’ve been lied to by those using [the Quran’s] Surah al-Maidah verse 51.”
Quran's Surah al-Maidah verse 51 tells muslims not to ally with (non-muslims) jews and christians
O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrong doing people. Seen in historical context the verse was revealed when the muslims were at war with jews and christians. In the last stages of prophetic mission in Medinah, Muslims had emerged as a dominant power and had set up a society of their own. At the same time, the polytheists of Makkah as well as Jews and Christians had also established setups and in case of an armed conflict, it seemed that any of them could have emerged as victorious. In such an environment the hypocrites among Muslims maintained ties with Jews and Christians. Their support was in order to safeguard their interests with whoever the victorious party would be. In addition, the hypocrites obviously had not accepted Islam from within their hearts.
The Jews made a secret deal with the pagans of Makkah against Muslims. When the Prophet came to know about this, the treaty between Muslims, Christians and Jews was cancelled. Abdullah ibn Ubaiyy, however, refused to break his allies with the Jews because they were financially stronger. He was adamant that he doesn’t know what will happen in the future. If tomorrow he is in need of the financially stronger party, the Jews won’t help him.
It is in this context that Quran revealed the following verses specifically admonishing these hypocrites among Muslims:
"O believers, do not take the Jews and the Christians as your friends and protectors, they are friends of each other. And whoever makes them a friend then he is from amongst them. Verily God does not guide the unjust people. And you will see that those (Muslims) in whose hearts is a disease run towards them saying 'We fear that a calamity may befall us.' So God will soon bring victory or a decision from Him, causing them regret on account of the thoughts they harbored in their hearts." (Quran 5:51-52)
